Agora Modiano has reopened in central Thessaloniki with a renewed focus on food, everyday shopping and casual dining. The historic covered market returned in September 2026 with 32 individual businesses operating under its restored roof, bringing back many of the traditional functions that made Modiano part of daily city life.

Located between Ermou Street and Vasileos Irakliou Street, the market has entrances from both sides, making it easy to include in a walking route through central Thessaloniki. Aristotelous Square and Tsimiski Street are only a short walk away, while Venizelou Metro station is the nearest metro stop.

What You Can Find Inside Agora Modiano

The new Modiano is much more clearly centered on food. Fresh produce, meat, fish, bread, cheese, dairy products and grocery items sit alongside places serving prepared meals, coffee, desserts, wine, beer and spirits.

The mix includes a butcher, fishmonger, bakery, grocery store and dairy shop, as well as souvlaki, grilled meat, fresh pasta, fish dishes and other casual food options. There is also a small brewery producing beer inside the market itself, while several businesses combine retail shopping with food prepared for immediate consumption.

This creates a market that works differently throughout the day. Visitors can arrive in the morning for coffee or groceries, stop around lunchtime for cooked food, or remain into the evening for drinks and dinner.

Is Agora Modiano Free to Visit?

Yes. There is no entrance ticket. Visitors can walk through the market freely, browse the shops or simply stop for something to eat or drink.

Opening hours vary considerably between individual businesses. Some cafés begin from around 7:30 or 8:00, while several food and drink venues remain open until midnight or as late as 2:00 in the morning. It is therefore worth checking the current business list before planning a visit.

During the September 2026 reopening, the main commercial activity is concentrated on the ground floor. The upper level is expected to take on a different role later, with cultural events and other organised activities planned as the renewed market develops.

The building itself dates back more than a century. Its doors on Ermou and Vasileos Irakliou first opened in March 1925, and Modiano soon became one of the best-known food markets in central Thessaloniki.
