How to Use Transport in Warsaw for first-time visitors | Airport, Metro, Tram, Bus, Taxi & Prices

Warsaw is one of the easier European capitals to understand once you know how the network fits together. Most visitors will use the same public transport system for metro, trams, buses, and SKM city trains, which makes the city feel far less complicated than it first appears.

For everyday sightseeing, Zone 1 is usually all you need, and the key fares are simple: 20 minutes for 3.40 PLN, 75 minutes for 4.40 PLN, 90 minutes for 7 PLN, 24 hours for 15 PLN, and 72 hours for 36 PLN. Tickets can be bought at machines, near major stops, in many vehicles, and through mobile apps, and they must be validated immediately after boarding a bus, tram or before entering the metro gates.

For most travelers, Warsaw Chopin Airport is the most convenient arrival point. It is about 10 kilometres from the city centre and is connected to the city by train and bus. The fastest public option is usually the train, with S2, S3, and RL services linking the airport to key stations such as Warszawa Zachodnia, Centralna, Śródmieście, and Wschodnia. If your hotel is better placed for street-level transport, bus 175 is the classic city-centre route, while 148 and 188 are useful for the Praga side and other districts east of the river. Late arrivals are also covered by the N32 night bus. If you prefer a car, the simplest choices are the official taxi rank, Uber, or Bolt, and the airport warns against random drivers inside arrivals.

Warsaw Modlin Airport needs more planning because it sits around 35 kilometers north-west of the centre and serves a large share of low-cost traffic. The usual value route is the airport shuttle to Modlin railway station and then the train to Warsaw. The whole journey is typically about 1 hour 15 minutes, and the dedicated Airport Ticket currently costs 20 PLN one way. If you want a simpler road transfer, direct coaches also run between Modlin and Warsaw, with Contbus serving the Marriott stop near Warszawa Centralna and a typical travel time of about 45 minutes in lighter traffic. Taxis are much more expensive from Modlin than from Chopin, with airport guidance pointing travelers to Taxi Modlin.

Inside the city, the metro is the fastest way to cross Warsaw, especially if you want to avoid traffic altogether. The system has only two lines: M1 running north to south and M2 running east to west, with Świętokrzyska as the key interchange. Trams are often the most pleasant option in central Warsaw because they keep you above ground and visually oriented, while buses fill the gaps the rail network leaves behind. One especially useful route for visitors is bus 180, which passes many major sights and follows much of the Royal Route toward Wilanów. At night, the city shifts to buses marked with the letter N, while the metro usually runs until midnight on weekdays and later on weekends. From the T1 tram secrets to the best late-night "wet burgers," We’ve stitched the city’s 10 essential stops into one practical guide.

The smartest way to use Warsaw transport is not to memorize the whole network, but to match the mode to the moment. Train first from Chopin if speed matters. Shuttle plus train from Modlin if value matters. Metro for long city crossings. Trams for central movement. Buses for awkward last stretches and late-night returns. Once you understand that structure, Warsaw becomes a city where getting around is usually faster, cheaper, and less stressful than many first-time visitors expect.
