Bey Hamam: Thessaloniki's 600-Year-Old Bathhouse Just Reopened

In the very center of Thessaloniki, right along Egnatia Street, stands one of the city's oldest surviving buildings — Bey Hamam. After decades of being partly closed off, it has now fully reopened to the public.

You couldn't ask for a more central spot. It sits almost exactly between Venizelou and Agia Sofia metro stations, just a couple of minutes' walk from either one, at the edge of Aristotelous Square.

Visiting info.

Open daily from 10:00 to 13:00, closed on Tuesdays. Entry is currently free, though a ticket is expected to be introduced from September 2026 — so this may be your window to visit for free.

A history older than the Ottomans.

Before Bey Hamam existed, this ground already belonged to Roman and early Byzantine Thessaloniki, and the bathhouse is believed to have been built over the remains of an earlier Byzantine structure. In 1444, Sultan Murad II ordered its construction, making it the first public building of the Ottoman era in the city — and today, the oldest and largest Ottoman bathhouse in Greece. Locals gave it a softer name: Loutra Paradeisou, the Baths of Paradise.

How it was used.

For over 500 years, this was a working bathhouse split into separate men's and women's sections, each moving from cool rooms to warm ones and finally into a hot central hall with marble platforms for washing. It was also a social hub — a gathering place much like a café or square would be today. Daily use continued until 1968, when home plumbing made public baths obsolete. From there it became an exhibition and cultural space, though parts stayed closed after earthquake damage in the late 1970s — until now.

What's nearby. Step back outside and you're right next to the Roman Forum, the ancient marketplace of Roman Thessaloniki, and just a short walk from the upper part of Aristotelous Square, connecting the historic center down to the waterfront.

Whether you're drawn in by the architecture or the history, Bey Hamam is one of the few places in the city where you can stand inside Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and modern Thessaloniki all at once.
