GATEWAY TO MOUNT ATHOS
Mount Athos is one of Greece’s most unusual destinations, but visiting it requires some planning. The journey normally begins in Ouranoupoli, where ferries, sightseeing cruises and visitor services connect travellers with the monastic peninsula.
From
Thessaloniki Airport, Ouranoupoli is roughly 120 kilometres away, with the
drive usually taking about two hours. The road continues through eastern
Halkidiki toward Ierissos and Nea Roda before reaching the village.
Travellers arriving from northern or eastern Greece can use the Egnatia Odos motorway before turning south toward Halkidiki. Regular KTEL buses also connect Thessaloniki with Ouranoupoli, but check departure times carefully if you need to catch a morning ferry.
PARKING IN OURANOUPOLI
If you arrive by car, paid parking is
available near both ends of Ouranoupoli. One option is close to the entrance of
the village, while another is farther along toward the Mount Athos side. Both
are convenient for leaving your vehicle before boarding.

THE MOUNT ATHOS PERMIT
Men entering Mount Athos need a special permit known as the Diamonitirion. It must be arranged in advance and collected in Ouranoupoli before departure, together with the required identification.
Women are not permitted to enter the
monastic territory, but sightseeing cruises allow everyone to view the
monasteries from the sea.

FERRIES AND CRUISES
The main pilgrim ferry travels from Ouranoupoli to Dafni, the principal port of Mount Athos, with stops near several monasteries along the western coast. From Dafni, visitors can continue inland toward Karyes, the administrative centre.
Other services continue farther south,
while sightseeing cruises sail along the coast toward areas including Karoulia,
offering views of some of Mount Athos’s most dramatic monasteries from the sea.
