Where is it?

The Lascaris War Rooms are a series of underground tunnels and rooms nestled within the heart of Valletta, the capital city of Malta, essentially below the Saluting Battery. This Mediterranean island nation boasts a rich history and is renowned for its strategic importance in various historical conflicts. It even became the Headquarters of the Royal Navy's Mediterranean Fleet.

How to access

To access this remarkable piece of history, head to Valletta's historical center. The Lascaris War Rooms are discreetly tucked away 150 feet beneath the Upper Barrakka Gardens, offering visitors an immersive and authentic experience of the wartime past. The war rooms you can visit were used until 1977!

History up to WW2

Constructed during the late 16th century by the Knights of St. John, the Lascaris War Rooms were initially intended as a secret underground hospital. Throughout the years, they underwent multiple transformations, serving as headquarters for various military powers that held sway over the island. The Briths expanded the tunnels in 1940 and completed the expansion 3 years later. Around 1.000 worked in the complex at that time.

History after WW2

Following World War II, the significance of the Lascaris War Rooms didn't diminish. In the post-war era, the complex continued to serve as a vital strategic command center, playing a crucial role during the Cold War and other conflicts. It was actually the Mediterranean Fleet HQ and soon, in 1967, NATO used it as an important Communication Centre.
