OLD
TOWN-DAY
We
start by walking through the narrow, cobblestone streets that weave through the
neighborhood. The roads are often winding, creating a maze-like layout that
invites you to explore hidden corners and discover beautiful old homes, each
with its own personality. The streets are lined with small shops offering
traditional crafts and local products, from handmade jewellery to intricately
woven textiles. Many of these items are produced by local artisans who have
been practising their trades for generations, adding to the authentic
atmosphere of the town.
As we move towards the upper part of the Old Town, we come across small taverns tucked away in hidden corners. These local eateries are not just places to enjoy a delicious meal, but also cultural landmarks in their own right. Many of the taverns serve traditional dishes passed down through generations, including "sarmades" (stuffed vine leaves) and local meats cooked in clay pots. The atmosphere here is lively, yet intimate, with locals often gathering for an evening of food, music, and storytelling.
The
Kuyumdjoglu Mansion in Xanthi is one of the city’s most impressive and
historically significant buildings, showcasing the grandeur of the 19th
century. Built by the wealthy tobacco merchant Ioannis Kuyumdjoglu, this
stunning neoclassical mansion is a prime example of the architecture that
flourished in Xanthi during its peak as a tobacco trade center.
We
are now at Mitropoleos Square where the Episcopal Palace and the Metropolitan
Cathedral of St John the Baptist are.
If
you walk up, you can find the Ahrian Mosque, highlighting the harmonious
coexistence of different cultures in Xanthi’s past, a legacy that continues to
define the city today.
If you walk further up, you will approach one of the oldest and most picturesque sections of the town, where the traditional wooden houses are perched on hills overlooking the city. From here, you can get a beautiful view of the modern city below, framed by the rolling hills in the distance.
KOSYNTHOS
RIVER AREA
The
Kosynthos River area in Xanthi is a picturesque and tranquil spot that
beautifully complements the city’s vibrant atmosphere. This scenic area offers
a peaceful escape from the bustling streets of the Old Town, making it a
perfect place for a leisurely stroll or a relaxing afternoon.
If you decide to go left instead of crossing the bridge, you can walk to The Path Of Life which ends to charming scenery.
FROM
KOSYNTHOS TO THE UNIVERSITY
We have just passed the charming Samakov Bridge and are now walking along Vasilissios Sofias Street, making our way toward the University. This stretch is a brief yet delightful journey, filled with local sights and a hint of Xanthi’s character.
For tourists, this area is quite convenient. As we approach the entrance of the University, you'll find an ATM, making it easy to access cash for any last-minute needs—whether you want to grab a souvenir or enjoy a meal at one of the nearby eateries.
TAVERNS
& THE BAZAAR AREA
Right across the impressive Philip Amiridis Monument, a tribute to one of Xanthi’s notable figures, you’ll notice a cluster of inviting cafes to our right. These cozy spots offer a perfect opportunity for a warm drink or a light snack, and we’ll have the chance to explore them more closely as night falls, when their ambiance truly comes alive with lights and laughter.
To
our left, you’ll find the Fire Service of Xanthi, an essential part of the
community that ensures the safety of residents and visitors alike. However, our
primary focus today lies across the street, where a vibrant array of taverns
and restaurants awaits us! These establishments are known for serving delicious
local dishes, allowing you to indulge in the rich flavors of Greek cuisine.
From traditional meze plates to hearty grilled meats, there's something to
satisfy every palate.
As
we pass these delightful eateries, we’ll also see a large parking area just
ahead. Every Saturday, this space transforms into a bustling bazaar, drawing
locals from near and far. The market is a vibrant tapestry of sights and
sounds, filled with stalls offering fresh produce, handmade crafts, and unique
local products. You can find everything from colorful fruits and vegetables to
artisan goods and textiles.
VASILISSIS
SOFIAS TO ANTICA SQUARE
As we said earlier in our tour, Antica Square is a vibrant hub filled with an array of bars and restaurants. This lively square is known for its bustling atmosphere, especially in the evenings when it comes alive with locals and visitors enjoying their time out. As we walk, take note of the diverse options available—each establishment has its own unique character, from cozy taverns serving traditional Greek dishes to modern bars offering innovative cocktails.
ANTICA
SQUARE TO VASILEOS KONSTANTINOU
As we leave the charming Antica Square behind, we continue our journey along Vasileos Konstantinou Road, where we’ll discover an exciting variety of options that cater to every taste and need. This bustling street is lined with eateries offering everything from casual comfort food to the much-loved Greek staple, gyros. Whether you're in the mood for a quick bite or a sit-down meal, this stretch has something for everyone, making it a perfect spot to refuel during your tour.
Now,
we’re crossing the street to enter the lively pedestrian area we mentioned
earlier. Imagine this area as a T-shaped layout, offering you two distinct
paths to explore. If you walk straight ahead, it will lead you directly to the
Bazaar Market we visited earlier—a bustling hub of local vendors and artisans,
where you can immerse yourself in the vibrant colors, sounds, and flavors of
Xanthi.
However, if you reach the middle of the pedestrian area and turn right, you’ll find yourself on a pleasant path that takes you toward the city’s main square. This route offers a more relaxed stroll, surrounded by historic buildings and charming storefronts.
Whichever direction you choose, you’ll notice that the entire pedestrian area is brimming with life. It’s filled with cozy cafes, lively taverns, and inviting eateries where locals and visitors alike gather to enjoy a meal or a coffee.
THE
MAIN SQUARE-DAY
Republic Square, also known as Xanthi’s main
square, is the vibrant heart of the city, rich in history and a focal point for
both locals and visitors. Its origins date back to the late 19th and early 20th
centuries when Xanthi was evolving into a prosperous town, largely due to the
thriving tobacco trade. Over time, Republic Square has become a key gathering
spot and a symbol of the city’s cultural and social life.
One
of the square’s most iconic landmarks is the Clock Tower, which stands tall as
a reminder of Xanthi’s historical significance. Built in the late 19th century,
the tower has witnessed the city’s transformation over the years. Its elegant
design and prominent position make it a popular meeting point and a defining
feature of the square. The Clock Tower not only serves as a symbol of Xanthi’s
past but also offers a connection to the city’s vibrant present.
CITY
CENTER-DAY
We
are now on 28is Oktovriou, one of Xanthi’s bustling streets known for its
convenience and variety. To our left, you'll find the city's top taxi
spot—usually the busiest and most reliable area for catching a ride, with a
wide availability of cars to get you where you need to go quickly.
As we continue along the road, you’ll notice a vibrant mix of shops that cater to both locals and visitors. From clothing boutiques offering the latest fashion to pharmacies stocked with essentials, this street has it all. For those craving a bite to eat, there are several comfort food eateries along the way, perfect for grabbing a quick and satisfying meal. Whether you’re in the mood for a quick gyros, a coffee, or some local pastries, there are plenty of spots to choose from.
This
partly pedestrianized area offers a dynamic blend of shops and
café-restaurants, making it a popular spot for both shopping and relaxing. As
we explore, you’ll notice a lively mix of local businesses and well-known
chains, offering everything from fashion and accessories to cozy places for
coffee and a meal. It’s also home to the Cosmos Center Mall, a key attraction
in this area, which houses a variety of stores and a Cineplex for movie lovers.
While
some of the smaller shops inside the mall may currently be vacant, there’s
still plenty to explore. In fact, several major Greek retail chains have
established branches here or are conveniently located near the main road we
passed earlier, offering everything from clothing to home goods and
electronics.
THE
CARNIVAL
Xanthi’s
Carnival is one of the most exciting and colorful events in Greece,
transforming the city into a vibrant celebration of culture, music, and
tradition. With roots dating back to ancient Greek customs honoring Dionysus,
the god of wine and revelry, this modern-day festival combines those traditions
with the lively spirit of the region.
The
festivities begin weeks before the main event, with the city buzzing with
energy as decorations go up and events unfold. Streets are adorned with
colorful lights, and Xanthi comes alive with parades, music, dance, and
cultural performances. The carnival offers something for everyone, from
theatrical performances and children’s events to concerts and street parties.
At
the heart of Xanthi’s Carnival is the grand parade, which draws visitors from
all over Greece and beyond. Thousands of costumed participants fill the
streets, dancing and celebrating as vibrant floats pass by. The costumes range
from traditional Greek attire to modern, whimsical creations, adding to the
spectacle and fun. It's a time when the city lets loose, and everyone is
invited to join in the excitement.
OLD
TOWN AND CITY CENTER-NIGHT
And
now, we’ve arrived at the final—but certainly not the least exciting—part of
our tour: a magical night walk through Xanthi!
The ambiance of the Old Town at night is something truly special—quiet, yet full of character, with the charm of its architecture and narrow alleys revealing a whole new side to the city. You’ll see the taverns, cafes, and shops bathed in a warm evening light, offering a completely different atmosphere from the daytime bustle.
