We are trying to illustrate the traffic problems created during the road works for the expansion of Thessaloniki’s ring road. The Fly Over will in simple words be a new overhead road above the current one which will also be expanded.

We are driving in real time so you can witness with your own eyes what problems arise.

Do you or have you used the road? Please share your thoughts in the description section.

As you can see, some lanes have been reduced and for now, there is a series of deviations to make space for the works taking place in the middle of the highway.

We are driving east to west to the biggest part of the road and then we head north to the various road exits, either to the border or to Eastern and Western Macedonia at Egnatia road.

Up to the time of uploading this video, the time estimate for work completion was updated to be by the end of fall 2027.

Watch this next, it will give you an aerial view of Thessaloniki’s Ring Road:

Avoid Thessaloniki Traffic: Time-Saving Ring Road Guide

So far, the traffic jams are endless and daily, that’s why we chose to drive on a Sunday morning so you can see how the situation is.

In summer there are fears that tourists heading to the highly touristic Chalkidiki peninsula will be faced with endless hours of waiting!

That’s a situation that locals already are faced with, though, daily!

So, the problem is here to stay for years!

As we keep on driving west, let’s dive a bit more into the details:

Thessaloniki, a vibrant city with a rich history, faces a modern challenge: traffic congestion. The current Ring Road now struggles to keep pace with the city's growth.

So, after years of talks, a bold solution is rising - the Thessaloniki Flyover.

Imagine spending hours stuck in traffic, missing work, appointments, or precious moments with loved ones. This is the reality for many Thessalonians. The outdated Ring Road, built decades ago, can't handle the ever-increasing volume of vehicles. The consequences are far-reaching, impacting businesses, tourism, and air quality.

This isn't just an inconvenience; it's a barrier to progress. Businesses struggle with delivery delays, tourists spend less time exploring, and pollution casts a shadow over the city.

This is supposed to be the solution: Thessaloniki Flyover, a game-changer in the making. This innovative project will soar above the existing Ring Road, a 13-kilometer elevated expressway designed for speed and efficiency. Imagine a seamless journey, bypassing traffic jams and reaching your destination faster. Yes, now it’s a dream,  but we hope it will become a reality in the years to come!

The Flyover is more than just concrete and steel. It's a testament to engineering ingenuity, featuring state-of-the-art technology and sustainable practices. It will reduce travel times by up to 50%, boosting economic activity and improving air quality. At least, that is what they promise us!

The Flyover's impact goes beyond traffic. Businesses will benefit from faster deliveries and reduced costs. Residents will enjoy more time for leisure, family, and work-life balance. The environment will see a significant reduction in emissions, creating a cleaner and healthier city. So far though, the problem is visible in the city center, where traffic is increased.

This is not just about getting from point A to point B faster; it's about unlocking Thessaloniki's full potential. The Flyover is an investment in the city's future, creating a more efficient, sustainable, and livable environment for generations to come.

No project is without its challenges. The Flyover's construction brings temporary disruptions, and concerns about environmental impact need to be addressed. However, the project is committed to minimizing these impacts and ensuring transparency throughout the process.

The Flyover is just the beginning. It's part of a larger vision for a more connected and sustainable Thessaloniki. Future plans include integrated public transportation, green spaces, and walkable neighbourhoods, creating a city that prioritizes people and the environment.

After all, the first metro line is to be delivered to passengers for use before the end of 2024. This underground system will be driverless and frequent! So we have been told anyway!

The Thessaloniki Flyover is more than just a road; it's a symbol of progress, innovation, and a brighter future for the city. It's a story of overcoming challenges, embracing change, and building a better tomorrow for all.

We are trying to think positively and embrace the future, but so far we struggle to cope with the daily problems the road expansion creates!
