What’s Hidden Inside Valletta’s Cathedral?

Ever stepped into a church and gasped? You’re about to.

Paintings by Caravaggio. Gold dripping from every surface. A floor made of marble tombs. And it’s all hiding behind one of the plainest stone facades in Europe.

Welcome to Saint John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta, Malta. It’s not just beautiful - it’s mind-blowing. Let’s head inside.

As we enter, it’s hard to believe this was built for the Knights of St. John, a military order. The stark stone exterior gives no hint of the explosion of gold, marble, and craftsmanship inside. This cathedral was completed in 1577 - but what you see today is mostly due to 17th-century upgrades, when the Knights wanted to outdo Rome itself.

And here it is: one of Malta’s greatest treasures. The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist by Caravaggio - his only signed work. Dark, dramatic, and violent, it sits in its own Oratory, completely commanding the room. A second painting, Saint Jerome Writing, also hangs nearby, adding another layer of moody genius to the cathedral’s collection.

Back in the main nave, look up. Every inch is dripping in detail—vaulted ceilings painted by Mattia Preti, intricate carvings, gilded moldings. Even the marble floor is a work of art, laid with 400 tombstones of knights from across Europe, each one uniquely inlaid with colored stone.

Don’t miss the eight side chapels, dedicated to the languages—or nationalities—of the Knights. Each is bursting with art and symbols that tell stories of power, rivalry, and devotion.

You’ll find the cathedral right in the heart of Valletta. It’s easy to walk here from anywhere in the city center. Entry isn’t free - but it's absolutely worth it. Tickets cost around €15 for adults. Last entry is typically around 4:00 PM, but double-check online as hours can vary slightly with seasons or religious events. https://www.stjohnscocathedral.com/
