Upper City Fortification, Acropolis of Thessaloniki, and Trigonio Gate

The Byzantine Walls are located in the upper part of Thessaloniki, including the Upper City Fortification, the Acropolis of Thessaloniki, and Trigonio Gate. These ancient fortifications were built during the Byzantine period and significantly protected the city from invasions. The Acropolis of Thessaloniki, a fortified complex, offers breathtaking views of the city and the Thermaic Gulf.

To visit these landmarks, you can start by exploring the Upper City area, where you'll find remnants of the fortifications. Don't miss the Trigonio Gate, an impressive entrance that once served as a crucial passage into the city. Today, you can walk through the gate for free 24/7. The Chain Tower is open on weekdays from 9 AM to 3 PM, except Mondays.

Lower City Fortification

Moving on to the Lower City, we find the Lower City Fortification. Situated closer to the waterfront, this defensive structure also dates back to the Byzantine era. The fortification walls served as a protective barrier for the city and its inhabitants.

To explore the Lower City Fortification, head towards the coastal area and walk along the promenade. You'll come across sections of the ancient walls that have been preserved. Take a leisurely stroll on the renovated pedestrian area and immerse yourself in the history that surrounds you.

Church of Saint Pavlos

One of the architectural gems in Thessaloniki is the Church of Saint Pavlos. Located in the heart of the city, this Byzantine church dates back to the 14th century. Its stunning frescoes and intricate mosaics make it a must-visit for art and history enthusiasts.

To visit the Church of Saint Pavlos, walk from the Chain Tower to the forest.  The exact origins of the church are unclear, but it is believed to have been built on the site of an early Christian basilica. You can step inside this beautifully preserved place of worship and admire the religious artwork that adorns its walls. Remember to dress modestly as a sign of respect.

Theater in the Forest, Theatro Dasous

Tucked away in the lush greenery of Thessaloniki's Seich Sou Forest, you'll find the Theater in the Forest, also known as Theatro Dasous. This open-air theater is a cultural hub, hosting various performances and events throughout the year.

To experience the magic of Theatro Dasous, head to the Seich Sou Forest, located in the western part of Thessaloniki. The history of the theater dates back to 1951 when the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) company decided to create a recreational area in the city's Seich Sou Forest. Architect Dimitris Fatouros was commissioned to design the theater, which was constructed between 1952 and 1954.

Thessaloniki is a city that never fails to impress with its historical landmarks.
